Smallmouth bass have been stocked in several Texas lakes. Lakes larger than 100 acres and more than 30 feet deep with clear water is this species preferred environment. The maximum size in Texas exceeds 7.5 pounds. Also known as brown bass, brownie and bronze bass, this aggressive fish is a great fighter once hooked. Smallmouth bass thrive on other fish, bugs and crustaceans. When the water temperature reaches 60 degrees, nesting and spawning take center stage with the male spawning, at times, with several females on a single nest.
