Small streams and creeks are the favorite habitat of longears. Vegetation is what they well seek and avoid strong currents by inhabiting pools, inlets, and waters off the main stream channel. Spring and early summer is spawning time. Longear sunfish rarely exceed six inches in length. The species is found throughout Texas. Longears are small and relatively easy to capture with simple, natural baits such as earthworms. Young anglers with little experience like this species because they are easy to catch and have a lot of fight for their size. Trotliners like this bait for catfish and fly fishermen like that the longear will rise to the surface to take baits.
