The blue catfish is the largest freshwater sportfish in Texas. The state rod-and-reel record is 121.5 pounds. 50 pounders are not unusual. Among licensed Texas anglers, catfish is the second most preferred game fish, with bluefish ranking third behind channel and flathead. Spawning habits are much like the channel catfish. Normally, the blue catfish becomes sexually active at about 24 inches. Blue catfish is an excellent table fare. The blue catfish pursues a varied diet, but it tends to eat fish earlier in life. When bigger, they will add large vertebrate to their diet.
